North Development Region (NDR) ranks second among the development regions according to the GDP and contributes to the National GDP with a share of 16%.
SMEs in the NDR continue to represent the backbone of the regional economy, accounting 99% of enterprises, actively involved in the regional economic sectors and making a vital contribution to the growth of the regional economy.
The region is connected to the European and Eastern-European markets via an international road (Giurgiulesti-Briceni Corridor) and two national routes (M14 and M2) as well as via railways.
NDR is the only region that has the opportunity of air access through two airports - Balti International Airport and Marculesti International Airport.

The municipality of Balti is the main economic polarizer and the most important industrial and commercial center of the NDR, the main national and international roads and railways meeting here. By its geographical location, the municipality of Balti is a point of attraction for many foreign capital enterprises, the number of which has been growing over the recent years. With good traditions in many sectors of the economy, the industry is the main one for the municipality of Balti. The presence of a high number of large industrial enterprises is a good premise for the development of extended value chains with a positive impact on the SME sector of the municipality, but also of the NDR in general. The existence of the Balti “Alecu Russo” State University and vocational schools is an extremely favorable premise for the long-term economic development of the municipality and increase in its competitiveness.

The town of Glodeni is located in the north-west of the Republic of Moldova, it is the administrative, economic and cultural center of the Glodeni rayon. Its proximity to Balti is a favorable premise for economic development. The main branches of activity in the town of Glodeni are agriculture, constructions and trade. A beneficial influence over the town’s economic development comes from the “Exel Manufacturing” Ltd. mixed capital enterprise (a clothing business) employing about 120 people.

The town of Floresti is the administrative center of the rayon with the same name and is located in the north-east of the Republic of Moldova, on the Raut River. Its location close to the Ukrainian border, but also in the immediate vicinity of the municipality of Balti, makes the town attractive for enterprises aiming at national markets, but also those of neighboring countries in the border-adjacent areas. The town of Floresti is a center of agri-food and light industry. The agri-food industry is the most developed and is represented by the fruit and vegetable processing enterprises. Industrial purpose spaces and land are available that could be repurposed into modern industrial parks.

The town of Falesti is located in the south-eastern part of the continent and in the north-western part of the Republic of Moldova. The geographical location of the town is quite favorable due to its proximity to Romania and the developed infrastructure (the branched railway, Balti-Chisinau and Iasi-Sculeni-Balti routes). The basic branches of the local economy are light industry, car manufacturing, and processing of agricultural production. There are spaces available for industrial activities. The town of Donduseni is the administrative center of the rayon with the same name. The geographical location near the Ukrainian border makes the town an interesting location for investors. The town is also on 2 transport arteries of national importance – the Otaci-Drochia national road (through the city center) and the Ocnita-Chisinau railway (the western part of town). Donduseni has access to the railway, which connects it with the municipality of Balti and Ocnita, and further with Romania and Ukraine. The basis of the local town economy is industrial production. The industrial enterprises in the rayon operate mainly in light industry and food industry.

The town of Briceni is the administrative center of the rayon. It is located in the valley between the Lopatnic and Vilia rivers, by the international road Balti-Cernivtsy, at the Ukrainian border. Its location close to the border with Ukraine makes the town an interesting destination for foreign and domestic investors targeting the regional markets. There are foreign capital enterprises operating here and specializing in fields such as production of oil from canola and other oilseed plants, buying cereals, pig farming, which could attract additional investments in related agriculture and industry branches and drive their development. The high soil quality and small share of eroded land speak about the advantages that investors wishing to place their capital in agriculture could have.

The town of Ocnita is located in the north-west of The Republic of Moldova, on the right bank of the Dniester River at the border with Ukraine (The town of Moghilev-Podilsk). The town is the most northern railway point of The Republic of Moldova, ensuring the connection between Balti and Noua-Sulita (Ukraine). The town of Ocnita is the administrative, economic and cultural center of the rayon with the same name. The industrial sector of the town is relatively well-developed, the agri-food sector dominating the scene: production of bakery goods and pasta, canning, dairy products. At the same time, other branches of the local economy are also represented: light industry, wood processing, production of essential and mixed oils, production of construction materials, extractive industry.

Riscani is a town in the North Region of The Republic of Moldova and it is the administrative center of the rayon with the same name. The town of Riscani is located in the north-west of The Republic of Moldova, on the Copaceanca River (tributary of the Raut River). Its proximity to Romania provides the town with economic advantages. Riscani is an industrial center of regional importance. Soroca is the administrative center of the Soroca rayon, it is the 8th largest town in The Republic of Moldova, but also the second largest in size and importance in NDR (after Balti). The town is located in the north-eastern part of the Republic of Moldova, on the right bank of the Dniester River, near the Tsekinovka village in Ukraine and is recognizable by the Soroca Fortress – a unique historical monument in the architecture of Moldovan defensive buildings, built in stone by Steven the Great in 1489. Soroca has a well-developed industrial potential, represented by enterprises from various branches of the economy. The main branch of the town’s economy is manufacturing, the food and light industry having the leading role.

The town of Drochia is located in the northern part of the country along the Balti-Ocnita railway line between Balti, Soroca, Riscani and Edinet. Due to its geographic location, the town has a high development potential. The town economy is represented by activities mainly in industry, commerce and the tertiary sector. The modern industry of the city is represented by modern enterprises, which process almost all kinds of agricultural products: sugar beet, tobacco, corn for seeds, milk and meat. Machinery for industrial refrigeration, furniture, wood and plastic packaging, clothing, bakery and pastry products, etc. are manufactured here. The town businesses deliver goods to Romania, Ukraine, Russia, Belarus, etc.

Edinet is an important town of NDR and the administrative center of the same rayon. It is on the Odessa-Chisinau-Brest international route. It is located near the Romanian border. The local economy ensures the activity of a large number of enterprises in different sectors: industry, commerce, restaurants and hotels etc. Industry is of enormous importance for the economy of the municipality. The industrialization level of the rayon is largely determined by traditions in the manufacturing industry (preserves, sugar, dairy) and extractive industry. Namely, these branches hold the largest share in the sales volume.

Singerei is a town in the Republic of Moldova, the administrative center of Singerei rayon. The town is located on the left bank of the Ciulucul-Mare River and on the Chisinau-Cernivtsy international road, 26km away from the municipality of Balti. Its proximity to Balti is a major advantage for the Singerei producers. The town’s economy is represented by commercial and agricultural activities, and services. The agricultural crop processing activities do not register development at the stage of raw material collection and storage by farms. Currently the investment areas are the agricultural products processing, transports, communications and trade. There are also other opportunities: tourism development and construction materials.
